Reading “Runaway” from an ethical perspective will let us know that Alice Munro demonstrates the double impasses of both the ethics of the Subject and the ethics of the Other. The classical discourse on subjectivity is mythol course, however, wo ogized, requiring the absolute rationality and the will of the subject. Rejecting the dis- uld leave the subject foundationless, drowning him in meaninglessness. Levinas' ethics of the Other, which could be a remedy to nihilism and loneliness, might bereave the subject, especially woman, of his/her freedom. To Munro, there is now way out.
