In the early 1980s, a feature (numbered as M34) in special style was excavated in the palace and ancestral temple zone at Xiaotun in Yinxu site. Because of the insufficient comparable materials, the exca- vators preliminarily classified it as a burial, but also noticed that it sharply differed from the other burials exca- vated in Yinxu site in the past. Along with the increasing of the excavation data, many similar features have been found in Yinxu since then. Through the comparison of M34 and the similar features found in Yinxu and other sites, it is inferred that the M34 in the palace and ancestral temple zone at Xiaotun was not a burial in special structure but more likely a well, or a storage pit with the function of cold cellars.
