SHEN Cong-wen＇s writing, at first, pursued the individual life consciousness in the survival plight, and made the spiritual feeler stretch into the space which preserved his warm, fragrant and fine memories in his hometown. Then he constructed the ideal spiritual home at the same time of the rational examination and the emotional criticism to social reality by pursuing the beauty of humanity and the kindness of life form. Finally in the contradiction of the ideal and the reality, with the anxiety and thinking of the national future, he penetrated into national history to explore the treasures of the cultural spirit, which with the literature as the improvement of social weapon, expected to open the mind and soul of the life, to change history and recreate the national morality.
