Being two main characters in East of Eden written by Steinbeck,Adam represents the virtue while Cathy stands for the evil.The thesis aims to interpret Foucauldian fright that Adam and Cathy possess,and to analyze how fright takes effect on making sex,dialogues and power intertwine and interact with each other during the periods when fright is folding,splitting,recombining and alienating.The paper draws a conclu-sion that the passion of one＇s life springs from fright,and it can enable someone possess the power of love and production,as well as the power of destruction.
