From " Nine Chapters" to " Chinese Ancient Mathematical Books" :An Interpretation of Wang Ki Tung'Letter to Li Yan

王季同出生于洋务运动时期,是经历中国数学由传统到现代转变的数学家.李俨是中国数学史学科的主要开创者和奠基人.中国科学院自然科学史研究所图书馆藏有一封王季同致李俨的信,是反映王季同数学思想的重要史料,对于研究清末民初数学家对中国传统数学和清代数学的看法、李俨与王季同的学术交往均具有参考价值.文章披露和解读此信的内容,并考察其产生时间和相关背景,以期丰富关于王季同和李俨的研究.

As a mathematician, Wang Ki Tung was born in the period of Westernization Movement and experienced the transition of mathematics from tradition to modern in China. Li Yan is the main pioneer and founder of the subject of history of mathematics in China. The library of the Institute for the History of Nat- ural Sciences of Chinese Academy of Sciences collects a Wang Ki Tung＇s letter to Li Yan. It not only is an important historical material reflecting Wang＇ s mathematical thought, but also has reference value to the study on the views of mathematicians who lived in the late Qing dynasty and early period of republican China to Chinese traditional mathematics and the mathematics of Qing dynasty, and academic exchanges between Li Yan and Wang Ki Tung. This paper discloses and interprets the letter, and studies its formation time and related background. We hope it can enrich the research on Wang Ki Tung and Li Yan.
