Infection/inflammation is an important initiate factor of preterm birth, and infection is also a common complication of premature infants. Recently, a series of clinical researches have suggested that neonatal and maternal infection/inflammation are closely associated with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Furthermore, experinmn- tal studies have also shown that inflammation may interfere with normal retinal angio- genesis and participate with retinal neovascularization. To clarify the possible function of infection/inflammation in ROP plays an important role in its early diagnosis, treat- ment, and even prevention. This article reviews the role of infection/inflammation in ROP and discuss the underlying pathogenesis mechanism.
