Wolf Totem is a Chinese-French coproduction drama about a Chinese student who is sent to Inner Mongolia, where he learns about the wolf population, which is under threat by human activities. In 1967, during the Cultural Revolution, a young Beijing student, Chen Zhen (played by Feng Shaofeng), is lotted to join a production team in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, in northern China, to improve the livelihoods of the nomads. Chen and Yang Ke (played by Dou Xiao), another student from Beijing, become friends with a local Mongolian herdsman, Bilig (played by Basen Zhabu), and his wile, Gesimai (played by Ankhnyam Ragchaa).
