Since the outset of the subprime crisis, Spanish banking sector, especially savings banks, suffered from big losses. To this end, Spanish government began to consolidate saving banks, and gradually restructured its banking system. The article analyzes the process and its effectiveness, and considers that through capital injection and non-performing real estate loans stripping, Spanish banking system became more flexible and resilient. But banking restructuring increased fiscal burden, suppressed banking lending and ultimately impacted adversely on economic growth. Despite such flaws, we can still learn from the experience of Spanish banking restructuring.
