Germ Warfare in Southern China Conducted by Japanese Invading Troops

中国南方是抗战时期侵华日军实施细菌战的"重灾区"。1939年日军731部队在诺门罕实施细菌战后,于1940年、1941年、1942年在中国浙江衢州和宁波、湖南常德、浙赣地区连续三次实施大规模细菌战,造成至少超过3万中国和平居民死亡。1942年是日军实施细菌战最猖狂的一年,除浙赣地区以外,日军还在云南、广东等地实施细菌战。1942年至1944年,福建、广东、广西等省鼠疫、霍乱异常流行;滇西在被我远征军收复后,随即爆发严重的鼠疫。这些都应与日军细菌战相关联。过去,我国学术界主要侧重对731部队在东北的各种罪恶活动的研究,而对中国南方日军细菌战研究相对薄弱,今后,这种"北重南轻"的研究格局应向"北南并重"的良性研究格局转变,以利对日本侵华细菌战罪恶史作全面深入的揭露。

During the War of Resistance against Japan,China＇s southern areas suffered heavily from Japan＇s germ warfare. After a germ attack in the Battle of Khalkin- Gol in 1939,three consecutive large- scale germ operations were launched by Unit 731 in Quzhou and Ningbo of Zhejiang,Changde of Hunan and Zhejiang- Jiangxi region in 1940,1941 and 1942 respectively,killing at least 30,000 civilians. The year of 1942 witnessed Japan＇s most rampant germ warfare,its evil hand reaching Yunnan and Guangdong as well as Zhejiang and Jiangxi. From 1942 to 1944,plague and cholera became abnormally prevalent in Fujian,Guangdong and Guangxi and a terrible pestilence broke out in western Yunnan immediately after it was recovered by China Expeditionary Force. Those disasters were all caused by Japan＇s germ warfare. Past research in China used to focus on the crimes committed by Unit 731 in Northeast China,with little concern to Japanese germ warfare in southern China. Researchers are supposed to make a comprehensive and in- depth study of Japan＇s evil germ warfare in both the north and south of China.
