During the process of Europeanization,it is rather easy for some countries to achieve a smooth self-identity transition and acceded to the EU at an early stage. However,it appears more difficult for some others to achieve self-identity transformation, which has delayed their joining the EU.For example, different paths to Europeanization may be undertaken by two countries bearing similar features. What are the reasons for such differences? To answer this question, this paper makes a comparison of the Europeanization processes of Croatia and Serbia, both having a similar historical legacy of ideological struggles and ethnic wars. The author attempts to study their differentiated Europeanization processes from the domestic rather than EU perspective and argues that the differences in their strategies towards identity transformation could give us a proper interpretation.
