Scott. Fitzgerald ＇ s masterpiece The Great Gatsby shows a kind of survival state,which is mental exhaustion beneath orgy,of people who lived in the United States in the 1920s. The state is mainly presented in the following three ways： pleasure consumption,Sham sleep and symbolic significance of character ＂ Gatsby＂ in this work. And all of these reveal a struggle of human＇s spirit and a confusion of age.
