Taking Rite as Order--- Way and Rite of Siting on the Ground in Ancient China

在中国古代席地而居时期,席无疑是最重要的家具。它不仅是日常坐卧之用具,也是礼仪制度之载体。席从选材、工艺到装饰都要以礼而定,并形成等级序列;席的陈设要以礼而置,将家具陈设和空间秩序都纳入到礼制的范畴,进而规范席坐人们行为举止。以礼而序是席地而居时期室内家具陈设的基本准则。

In the ancient China when people lived with sitting on the ground,mat was undoubtedly the most important furniture.It was not the tool for sitting and sleeping,but also a carrier of rite system.The materials and crafts of making mats were decided by rites,and there was an order and degree;the setting of mats were also decided by rites,so as to put furniture setting and space order into rite system,and to rule people's behavior.Taking order according to rites was the basic rule of furniture setting in the time of living with sitting on the ground.
