In the field of Manchukuo literary studies, although there have been discussions of specific works of historical fiction, the general body of historical fiction produced in Manchukuo as a genre has largely escaped scrutiny. China, a nation with a long history of cultural accumulation, has, after all, never been short of a literature of historical stories and following the May Fourth Movement, historical fiction continued to be a powerful genre in the New Literature which emerged as a result. In Manchukuo in particular, historical fiction became an effective mode of indirect representation that enabled the writer to evade the weighty surveillance of public speech and the heavy censorship exercised by the colonial regime. Many Chinese writers in Manchukuo delineated the pains and sorrows of Manchukuo Chinese people under the domination of a foreign nation through the rewriting of wellknown stories of historical figures or anecdotes. In a word, the genre of historical fiction in Manchukuo, where it bears a particular significance, calls for a closer investigation.
