中国现代设计的产生伴随着西方殖民文化的侵入,西方坚船利炮打开的不只是中国国土的大门,同时还包含着文化渗入的路径。新兴的西洋事物出现逐渐出现在中国市场,吸引着中国人的眼球,一场全新的中西文化、经济、艺术的较量在繁华的旧上海演出,而审美的标准也随着中国早期现代设计的萌芽发生了巨大的改变。19世纪末20世纪初的中国正处于一系列新旧交替的社会矛盾之中,是墨守成规还是师夷长技成为社会的焦点。中西方商品市场的争夺在深刻的社会大背景下潜移默化地发生了一系列的搏弈,这种变化既有交融,又相互区别,更成就了旧上海商业市场繁荣兴起和中国设计发生发展的第一个转折点。
