Oxygen（O2） homeostasis plays a vital role in the growth and development of all metazoan species. As an oxygen-sensitive transcription factor, hypoxia-inducible factor 1 （HIF-1） functions as a master regulator of oxygen homeostasis by controlling both the delivery and utilization of 02 under conditions of hypoxia. This review mainly summarizes the protective role of HIF-1 in cardiovascular diseases.
