On Gan,the Shortened Form of Jiangxi: Origin and Evolutions

"赣"最早出现于春秋战国时期,字形字音历经演变,至魏晋时期"赣"字才成为普遍写法。"赣"之本意多有变化,内涵亦逐步扩大。宋以前,"赣"多指赣县或虔州州治之地;宋高宗改虔州为赣州,此后直至清代后期,说"赣"多指赣州或更宽泛的江西南部地区。清末,"赣"开始与"江"并行成为江西的简称,至民国,"赣"则完全取代"江",成为约定俗成的江西简称。

＂Gan＂first appeared during the period of Spring and Autumn and Warring States,its glyph and pronunciation have gone through evolution.＂Gan＂didn’t become a common writing until the Wei and Jin Dynasties. The original intention of ＂Gan＂has also much changed. Its connotation has also gradually expanded.＂Gan＂referred to Ganxian or the place governed by Qianzhou before the Song Dynasty. Emperor Gaozong in the Song Dynasty changed Qianzhou into Ganzhou,since then until the late Qing Dynasty,＂Gan＂mainly referred to Ganzhou or Southern Jiangxi. ＂Gan＂paralleled ＂Jiang＂,both became the shortened form of Jiangxi Province in the late Qing Dynasty.＂Gan＂,which was conventional,completely replaced ＂Jiang ＂in the Republic of China,and became the shortened form of Jiangxi Province.
