Around the world almost 8% of human pregnancies are diagnosed as fetal growth restriction (FGR). FGR is one of the important causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality, and is also associated with metabolic diseases in adulthood. A variety of animal models have been used in the research of FGR. Studies on animal models have shown changes in gut structure and function in FGR individuals, which lead to decline of the secretion of digestive juice and low rate of intestinal absorption. These changes are correlated with the change of gene expression. Moreover, activities of main enzymes are decreased in FGR individuals. These changes in structure and function ultimately affect the digestion, absorption and the metabolism of FGR animals, and they are also related with some diseases. In this paper, different kinds of FGR animal models were analyzed.
