German alchemist Fustus who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and youth has become a long-lasting ifgure in Western literal history. For hundreds of years, a lot of writers have written numerous works on Fustus, among which Christopher Marlow’s Doctor Faustus and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faustus are two of the best ones. According to Aristotle’s and Zhu Guangqian’s theories on tragedy, the two works differ greatly in tragic courses, catharsic effect and life-force, which leads to their difference in the tragicalness.
