An Analysis of the Translation of The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer Based on Catford's Translation Theory

悉达多·穆克吉(Siddhartha Mukherjee)的著作《百病之王:癌症自传》(The Emperor of All Maladies:A Biography of Cancer)的部分章节,笔者深切体会到,在最大限度传递原文信息的同时,还要保证译文通顺流畅、符合目标语读者的语言规范是非常难得的。文章采用翻译实践项目《百病之王:癌症自传》的英汉文本为分析材料,依据卡特福德的翻译转换理论为指导,从英语和汉语在词汇运用、句法结构、表达方式等方面的巨大差异出发,拟对译文在词汇、句法、语法等层面发生的层次转换、结构转换、类别转换和单位转换现象进行探讨。

From translating the third chapter of The Emperor of All Maladies： A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee,the author realizes that it is a diffficult task to deliver all the original information while at the same time ensuring the smoothness,readability and the language standardization of the translation. Based on the analysis of the English and Chinese text materials of The Emperor of All Maladies： A Biography of Cancer, and under the guidance of Catford＇s translation theory, this paper attempts to study the translation shifts including level shifts, structure-shifts, class-shifts and unit-shifts that take place in levels of vocabulary,syntax, grammar, etc.
