Comparative Analysis of Modality in English and Chinese

情态是语言人际功能的重要组成部分,功能语言学极大地拓宽了情态的范围。从功能语言学的角度,在对英语情态系统进行分类的基础上,对英汉情态进行对比分析。两种语言的情态都可以通过定式情态操作词、情态附加成分、情态隐喻、名物化结构等多种方式来实现,但英语和汉语都有十分复杂的情态系统,因而在情态表达语的具体形式、功能和意义上都有显著的差别。

Modality plays an important part in realizing the interpersonal function of language. The functional linguistics greatly broadens the scope of modality. This paper is going to rmke a comparative analysis of the Chinese and English modality on the basis of the classification of the modality system of English. In a functional perspective, both English and Chinese modality are typically realized by various means as finite modal operators, modal adjuncts, metaphors of modality, an expansion of the predicator and nominal equivalents, etc., but they also differ greatly in their specific expressions,functions and meanings since English and Chinese both have very complicated modality systems.
