索尔·贝娄是美国当代文坛最负盛名的作家之一,1976年诺贝尔文学奖获得者。1964年出版的《赫索格》是索尔·贝娄的代表作之一,次年为贝娄赢得了美国全国图书奖。通过文本细读,探寻贝娄文学作品中的主题特征;分析以主人公赫索格为代表的美国知识分子面临的精神危机的原因;赫索格最终探寻到走出精神困境的途径——回归自然;这些与贝娄本人深受美国超验主义的影响密不可分。
Saul Bellow is one of the most celebrated novelists in contemporary American literary circle. In 1976, Saul Bel-low was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Herzog, published in 1964, was one of Bellow's masterpieces, and won the National Book Award in the next year. This article adopts the method of close reading to explore the thematic features in BeUow's literary works, and then analyzes American intellectuals' spiritual crisis. Herzog's returning to nature at the end of the novel symbolizes his regaining spiritual freedom Such plot arrangement of the novel has demonstrated that Bellow is deeply influenced by American Transcendentalism.
