Saul Bellow is one of the most celebrated novelists in contemporary American literary circle. In 1976, Saul Bel-low was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Herzog, published in 1964, was one of Bellow＇s masterpieces, and won the National Book Award in the next year. This article adopts the method of close reading to explore the thematic features in BeUow＇s literary works, and then analyzes American intellectuals＇ spiritual crisis. Herzog＇s returning to nature at the end of the novel symbolizes his regaining spiritual freedom Such plot arrangement of the novel has demonstrated that Bellow is deeply influenced by American Transcendentalism.
