There has been a dispute among scholars on how to evaluate Trotsky as a critic. His artistic view is generally defined as ＂political science＂. In fact, Trotsky, based on his deep cultivation, formed a kind of dialectical materialism view of art, namely, stick to realistic determinism on the one hand, and emphasize artistic independence on the other. He affirms the importance of artistic exploration and penetrates his view throughout all his critical practice with a unique style of expression. This position has a special significance in the early stages of the former Soviet Union in a particular historical context.
