Kate Chopin created three major characters in her novel The Awakening. Mrs Ratignolle is traditional;Miss Reisz is independent;Edna is rebellious.They have their own characteristics, but all of them are fettered by patriarchal society. By creating the three kinds of female characters, it shows the author’s concern for the survival condition of women, criticizes the patriarchal society for its containment of female subjectivity, embodies Chopin’s carrying forward female self-awareness.
