With the trip of Ji Shengshen and Qingzhao to Motuo as the mainstay, Anne Baby＇ s The Lotus nar- rates the story of three urban marginal men-Shengshen, Qingzhao and Su Neihe-and expounds the theme of how the souls afflicted with emotional deficiency have been consoled and redeemed. This paper explores the theme of redemption in The Lotus in terms of the emotional deficiency, the physical agony and the approach to phantasm and points out that the key to the power of the novel lies in its attention to the soul.
