Quantifiers in “Ghost Stories”

《聊斋志异》中的量词"事""裹""章"都具有一定的历史传承性,与清代口语中的量词不同,将之与《聊斋俚曲》中的同类量词相比较,可以发现同是蒲松龄的作品,称量同类事物的量词却不同,基本呈现互补之势。这与两部作品的语言性质相关,《聊斋志异》是文言作品,《聊斋俚曲》是白话作品,这会导致遣词造句的不同,同类事物所用量词也会不同,是蒲松龄有意为之的结果。

The quantifiers, such as “shi”, “guo”, and “zhang” in “Ghost Stoies” are more of historical inheritance, which are different. Comparing with other works, the quantifiers in “Ghost Stories” are also different though written by the same writer. It is argued here that the difference is due to style difference. “ Ghost Stories” is written in classic Chinese while “Li- aozhai Poems” is written with vernacular Chinese. Thus the different choice of quantifiers is de- liberate.
