One salient feature of British modernist novels is to explore the form of the novel.A case in point is Virginia Woolf's novels,of which one striking quality is the heavy use of color in her writing.Prior studies mostly attribute Woolf's color inspiration to the influence of Post-Impressionism.However,this paper argues that color is a form of expression of'changes of rhythm'that Woolf had been seeking after. The heavy use of color in her novels can be accounted for by the combined influence of Post-Impressionism and Diaghilev's Balles Russes with the latter as the most natural and direct influence.
