Gain,a novel by American contemporary writer Richard Powers,is characterized by contrapuntal narration. It records the rise of American corporation and the fall of an individual, presents dramatically the metaphorical dialogue between the corporation's gain and human beings'loss, and therefore highlights the alienation of technology under the accomplice between technology and capitalist commerce. As a novel concerned with human mental ecology and science-technology ethics,Gainreveals the dual facet of science and technology as both'giving'and 'taking away',and also suggests the underlying connection between the Clare corporate history and Laura's individual experiences.Gain's criticism of technological rationality and the vigilance against the potential risks and effects of technological abuse show the indepth reflection of Powers on sci-tech ethics.
