Calvin Mateer and Tengchow College

中国第一所大学当属谁家？是《辞海》中定义为“中国近代最早的大学”、声名远扬的京师大学堂？还是始建于1895年、号称中国近代历史上第一所新式大学的天津大学前身北洋大学？抑或是某些学者提出的,诞生于19世纪90年代、完全按照西方大学模式建立的上海圣约翰大学？然而在学界众说纷纭的讨论中。

In 1882, Calvin Wilson Mateer, a missionary to China, founded Tengchow College as the first modern institution of higher education in Shandong Province. In 1901, Cixi implemented sweeping politi-cal reforms, and many colleges were set up as a result. Most of these colleges used Tengchow College as a model and hired graduates of Tengchow as teachers. In 1917, Tengchow College became Cheeloo University, which produced several deans of Shandong University andNanjing Shandong University. Calvin Wilson Mateer stayed 45 years in China, and died in 1908 in Qingdao.
