Juneteenth explores the relationship between racial problem and American democracy by telling of the story of a black father and his adopted son. With Western classical mythology as prototype, taking Afro- American folk culture as resources,Ralph Ellison combines the personal salvation with the cultural salvation of a nation to reveal the truth that black history and destiny is key to American freedom and democracy. Only to confront the "original sin "committed by the whites,to inherit the political tradition exemplified by Abraham Lincoln, can America embrace a bright future. Juneteenth is an Exodus for the blacks,an Odysseus' s journey for American nation,an allegory about the past history as well as a metaphor for the future of the country.
