This article reviews the debates on the nature of Ci Yuan( including its first and revised editions) and Ci Hai in the lexicographical circle. It holds that a clearer determination of the dictionaries' nature based on thorough discussions will optimize the compilation work,enable the compilers to draw lessons from a better summary of the compilation experience,and improve the theory of dictionary typology.
