Objective: To investigate and analyse the possible factors on pressure pain measurement via pressure algometer with the small 0.1 cm2 size probe and to establish the normal reference values of pressure pain threshold(PPT)and pressure pain tolerance(PTO). Methods:50 male and 50 female healthy volunteers were recruited in this study. PPT and PTO were measured at lateral brachioradialis of lateral elbow joint(point 1) and midpoint of medial and lateral borders of wrist(point 2) with a pressure algometer with the 0.1 cm2 size probe. Cortical thickness of the two points were also measured. Factors affecting pressure pain were measured and the normal reference ranges of PPT and PTO calculated. Results: Females experienced lower PPT and PTO than males at the two points(P〈0.001). The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that the PPT and PTO were positively correlated with genders(P〈0.001) and cortical thickness of the test point(P〈0.05), respectively. PPT and PTO at point 1 was lower than that at point 2(P〈0.001). In addition, we obtained normal reference values(kg/cm2)of PPT and PTO at the two points of 100 healthy volunteers. Conclusion: Both the PPT and PTO measurement with the 0.1 cm2 size probe might be affected by gender and the cortical thickness of the point. Point 2 might be more appropriate for pressure pain measurement in the clinical studies. The normal reference ranges of the PPT and PTO at the specific points for volunteers could be served as a reference for pressure pain measurement.
