Objective To evaluate the morphological changes of the titanium surface after irradiation with the Er ∶ YAG laser at various energies. Methods There are18 titanium discs in total,2 titanium discs that were not lased served as the control. 16 titanium discs were divided into four groups according to the irradiated various power settings with Er ∶ YAG laser( 100 m J,150 m J,200 m J,250 m J). In each group, there are 2 discs which were irradiated with 0% H2 O,and another 2 titanium discs with 100% H2 O. The surface of each disc was treated for 5 s at 45°. Then the surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy( SEM).Results After Er ∶ YAG laser irradiation, with 0% H2 O,all the four groups demonstrated significant melting, cracking, and crater formation on the surfaces in an energy-dependent manner. On the other hand, with 100% H2 O,the titanium surfaces have not significant changes at 100 m J / p. When the pulse energy is above 100 m J,the pulsed Er ∶ YAG laser induced partial melting, cracking, and crater formation on the surfaces in an energy-dependent manner. Conclusions The Er ∶ YAG laser does not damage titanium surfaces at 100 m J,and seems to be safe and useful of treating peri-implantitis,the power output of the Er ∶ YAG laser must be limited so as to avoid surface damage.
