This exhibition begins with a void. In this case, Malev- ich's influential small painting of a black rectangle: the exhi- bition grows from this surprisingly intimate work into a fas- cinating show documenting the influence of abstraction as a conceptual, political, and visual force across art and culture. The ground floor of the gallery focuses on the twentieth century, demonstrating how artists' approaches to linear, geo- metric abstraction have developed--bouncing between silver gelatin prints by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and gouache paintings from He1io Oiticica to magazine covers by E1 Lissitzky and Wyndham Lewis.
