丁乙:象牙黑

On the face of it, the show's title sounds like a reference to the binary opposition of the mono- chrome-black and white, ebony and ivory--as befits the sub- dued palette of the work shown here, but the name also refers to a particularly intense black pigment made of charred bone used in drawing and painting. It may be a coincidence, but we could take this as a cau- tionary note of sorts: even when something seems readily set up for easy division and categorization, as in Ding Yi's formal minimalism and the relative monochromaticity of this show, for instance, there's probably much more going on, whether through the inversion of binaries or the introduction of addi- tional terms that complicate a black-and-white view of things.
