丁乙:象牙黑

丁乙个展的主题“象牙黑”乍一看似乎是在表述展览呈现的两种单色的对立：黑与白、乌木黑与象牙白——就像是为了展览而调色。然而象牙黑本身还是一种用动物骨骼煅烧而成的黝黑颜料，既可用于素描，又可用于油画。这个题目的多重指代也许只是个巧合，但也为我们理解丁乙的作品提供了一丝暗示：即使丁乙作品中极简的形式和单一的色调带给我们非黑即白、非此即彼的表象，这却并非是作品的全部。

＂Ivory Black.＂ On the face of it, the show＇s title sounds like a reference to the binary opposition of the mono- chrome-black and white, ebony and ivory--as befits the sub- dued palette of the work shown here, but the name also refers to a particularly intense black pigment made of charred bone used in drawing and painting. It may be a coincidence, but we could take this as a cau- tionary note of sorts： even when something seems readily set up for easy division and categorization, as in Ding Yi＇s formal minimalism and the relative monochromaticity of this show, for instance, there＇s probably much more going on, whether through the inversion of binaries or the introduction of addi- tional terms that complicate a black-and-white view of things.
