《小尔雅》是继《尔雅》后出现的一系列雅书中最早的一种,所收均为古代疑难字词。对于这部较早的词语汇编,在文献学、辞书学、历史学、语言学等方面都有探讨的价值。文章从语言学的角度考察其书所收词语,主要从古汉语词汇发展趋势及古汉语同义词、同义复合词、方言词的发展等角度去考察,以期更好的认识汉代及汉以前语言发展情况。
