The Japanese writer Oe Kenzaburo has described the images of Japanese Americans in many of his novels. To search for the Japanese virtue—the Spartan spirit and its transformation in Japanese Americans, is one way in which Oe's literature presents its identity of Japanese culture. Nevertheless, the cultural identity seems not to be attractive any longer and the efforts that Oe's literature has made to draw closer Japanese Americans and Japanese are futile. That's because the Pacific War has left the mark which cannot be easily wiped out and this fact has also led these two groups to go their separate ways. Generally speaking, literature should be a reflection of the reality and Oe's literature is no exception to this rule. Subsequently, from the 1990 s the theme of the national identity of Japanese Americans disappeared completely from the literary world of Oe's.
