Diaoyu Islands:the Inherent Chinese Territory——Diaoyu Islands in Early Western Literature

本文是对早期西方文献中有关钓鱼岛的记载作些简略的介绍,考察西方人对钓鱼岛认识的发展变化,以及国际社会对钓鱼岛历史归属的认知。从16世纪至18世纪初,西方对钓鱼岛的称呼虽然不断演变,但是都把钓鱼岛和台湾北部的岛屿视为不可分割的一组地理单位,是中国固有领土——台湾岛的附属岛屿,而不属于先岛群岛。

This paper briefly introduced records on the Diaoyu Islands in early Western literature and examined how the Western knowledge of the Diaoyu Islands changes as well as how the international society understands the issue on the ownership of the Diaoyu Islands in history. Although the Western world gave different names to the Diaoyu Islands from time to time between the sixteenth century and early eighteenth century, they had always considered the Diaoyu Islands and the islands near northern Taiwan as a whole set of indivisible geographic unit. In other words, the Diaoyu Islands belong to Taiwan--an inalienable part of China, rather than to the Miyako Islands.
