THEM is Joyce Carol Oates' s representative novels. By describing the hard life of three generations of the Wendell's family in the chaos of American society from the 1930 s to the 1960 s,Oates shows a prospect of human existence and provides an illustration for existentialism. By analyzing the elements of existentialism from the aspects of "the absurd world","individual and the other",and "individual existence and freedom",Oates' s humanistic care and momentous implications of this novel are disclosed.
