Russian Symbolism marked the transition from classical to modem poetry. Its explorative spirit and innova- tive achievements in poetics have far-reaching influences on Russian literature. The principle of fiction, and the re- flections of the spiritual crisis and decadent mood in the cross-century period had an impact on Realism, and the two developed an interactive relation. Its obsessions with the magic power of words, and its innovative experiments in rhythm and poetic forms had a profound effect on Akmeism and Futurism. Even after the disintegration of the school of Symbolism, its principle of creative writing and the soul of poetry it upholds are still having a sustained, though im- plicit, influence on the literature to come.
