Abstract:Lord Jim is one of the masterpieces of Conrad' s. As the first outstanding modernisticnovel in English literature, it has raised a hot debate in literary circle since its publication. Chinesecritics tend to regard Conrad as a moralist, and analyze the novel from the angle of morality. Absorbing the theories of Psychoanalysis and Linguistics, etc., western critics in recent decades havewidened the research of Lord Jim. This article elaborates the debate on the novel and analyzes the opinion of each party.
