古茶树是民间对树龄较长的乔木大树茶的一种特殊称谓。自上世纪九十年代初始，云南普洱茶界习惯将乔木大叶种茶树细分为古茶树、乔木大（茶）树（含野放茶）、台地茶三种。这种分类不是植物学分类的结果，而是民间依据长期经验的一个总结，属于民间经验。
