Journalism Development in Anhui from 1919 to 1924:Base on the Journalism Investigation by the Japanese Consular in Wuhu

1923-1924年间日本驻芜湖领事馆向日本外务省隐秘地提供了两份关于安徽新闻报刊事业的调查报告。这些调查材料显示,从清末至1924年,安徽新闻报刊事业经历了萌芽、低迷、急速发展期,一时间仅省会安庆便有二十余家报社。之后多数报刊则因经营不振、缺少经费支持继而废刊以致倒闭,有些报刊则不得不求助于省府资助。省府资助的选择性对报刊的存续、安徽新闻报刊事业的发展曾产生了一定的影响。至1924年底,经历了短暂辉煌发展后的安徽新闻报刊界,只存有5家报社。

During the years between 1923 and 1924, the Japanese consular in Wuhu provided two reports of journalism devel- opment in Anhui secretly to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. According to the reports, from the end of the Qing Dynasty to 1924, journalism in Anhui underwent the stages of sprouting, depression and rapid development. For a moment, there were over twenty newspaper offices in Anqing, the capital of Anhui province. Later, most newspaper offices were closed because of poor management and insufficient funds ; some needed to turn to the provincial government for help. The selection of the provincial sup- port exerted influence on the existence, continuation and development of newspapers and journalism in Anhui. After a short-term prosperity, there were only five newspaper offices at the end of 1924.
