张謇先生对南通早期现代化建设的失败是历史的必然。实业救国的局限性及生产力的落后注定了南通早期现代化建设的悲剧结局,但"急进务广"的主观失策、社会责任的过度承担及天灾人祸的出现也加速了其早期现代化的失败,并造就了这位"伟大而失败的英雄"。

Zhang Jian＇s failure in the modernization of Nantong was historically inevitable. His efforts in the modernization were doomed to a tragic ending due to the limitations of industrial salvation of the nation and the then backward productivity. Meanwhile his mistaken view of a ＂radical and extensive＂ development,his excessive shouldering of social responsibilities ,and the natural and man-made disasters ,all of these have accelerated the failure, making Mr. Zhang Jian ＂a zreat but failed hero＂.
