The study of novels written in the 18th century has begun to receive an increased academic concern in the wake of the 18th century literature research. The realist novels go far beyond their contemporary neo-classical poetry and dramas in representing complexity of the transitional modern British society of the 18th century by exposing its significant social conflicts and spiritual crisis. Among the great novelists of his time, Defoe was one o( the masters at the realistic representation of the living world. With an in-depth analysis of the self-redemption of female transgressors in his Moll Flanders and Roxana, the paper endeavors to illustrate how Defoe reflected in his works the clash between the old and new social and moral values permeating in the 18th-century British society, and women' s struggle for survival and their transformative social re-construction in the process.
