This study takes 4288 non-English majors from seven second-level universities of Gansu Province as its subjects and investigates them with questionnaires. It finds that the major problems involved in college English learning are: learning motivation dominated by external factors, decreasing of interest to and learning time of the language with the ascending of grades, large-sized classes and unsatisfied teaching results, poor teaching facilities, inadequate English out-class activities, and unreasonable practice of indexing the students' marks of CET4 in line with qualifications to their certificate of bachelor' degree and graduation certificate. It concludes that these problems are caused by the "compulsoriness" of the course. It consequently suggests that the type of college English be changed from a compulsory course into an elective one so as to clarify the direction of the course and improve the teaching efficiency.
