Toward a Better Understanding of Traditional Chinese Theory of Translation

本文首先讨论中国传统译论的界定问题,继而总结中国传统译论的主要特点,即在论述方式上重直觉、重体认,在理论脉络上是内容的、纵向的,在形态结构上则零散不成体系。文章继而论证中国传统译论的特点源自中国传统哲学的主观性、综合性和具体性等特质。文章认为,中国传统译论的特点有其民族、文化的根源性和历史的必然性,是中国人思想体系和思维方式的体现,其核心价值和精神理应得到学术界的正视、肯定和守护。

This essay, after a discussion of how to define traditional Chinese theory of translation, lists three major characteristics of traditional Chinese theory of translation, i. e. , a） in mode of discourse it focuses on intuition and personal realization; b） in theoretical pattern it is intensional and vertical; and c） in form and structure it is loose and unsystematic. These characteristics all stem from such attributes as subjectivity, syntheticalness and concreteness typical of traditional Chinese philosophy. The essay maintains that traditional Chinese theory of translation, having its national and cultural source and historical inevitability, is an embodiment of the Chinese way of thinking, and its core value and spirit ought to be acknowledged and upheld by present-day translation scholars.
