＂Beloved＂ is the masterpiece of African - American female writer Toni Morrison. Since the novel was published in 1987, it attracted the attention of critics. Beloved appeared in the form of soul , whose identity kept wandering, with a variety of symbolic meaning. Her appearance led to Sethe＇s schizophrenia, but also promotes the spiritual growth of Denver. This intangible character with many identities in one revealed the trauma of the United States serfdom to blacks. Through de- scription of Beloved and related characters and events, Morrison showed several levels and point of views about suffering history of African American to the readers, also attacked the sin of American slavery.
