As an experimental postmodern novel, The French Lieutenant's Woman, which embeds the issue of woman and freedom, has been frequently targeted, while the new woman, Sarah, has been extolled as the symbol of woman's freedom and emancipation. John Fowles presents three kinds of freedom for woman:social freedom, existential freedom and nar-rative freedom. Through the analysis of these three kinds of freedoms, it is possible to better comprehend the big contrast between Sarah, the new woman, and Ernestina, the conventional Victorian woman, and to see how society stifles women's self-awareness and how women succeed or fail to maintain their selves confronting the cruel social restrictions.
