"Service-learning" is a contemporary reform movement to connect university academic education to community. It has been introduced into the higher education programs in landscape architecture in the United States since late 20th century. The university faculty members and students have effectively collaborated with community partners towards mutual benefits. This pedagogy challenges the traditional practice-and problem-based learning model between professional teachers and students. Seth, ice-learning is oriented towards enlightenment and empowering, instead of exploitation. It emphasizes emersion experiences and acknowledges the differences. Partners reflect their roles and interrelationship continuously. Service-learning encourages intercultural learning, reciprocity and exchange. It also incorporates social, political and ethical issues. In general, service-learning brings a new perspective for current landscape architecture education, which services the increasingly cosmopolitan and multi-cultural society.
