The sound of water, skillfully manipulated to produce both aesthetic and therapeutic effects, was an essential part of garden experience in Renaissance and Baroque Italy: This essay examines the specific settings where it was exploited (sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Italian fountains, grottos, and nymphaea); the subject matter, meaning, and contemporary" reception of different representational conceits that such acoustic display typically involved;and the hydraulic and pneumatic technologies that enabled this diverse soundscape. The author argues that these artificial sonic stimuli--intended to stimulate imagination as well as delight and amuse--were primarily aimed at an emotive response, in keeping with the purpose of Italian Renaissance and Baroque gardens as the sites of mental and physical recreation rather settings for intellectual discussions or alrtistic and literary pursuits.
